What is Conficker?

Conficker is a computer worm that allows hackers to take remote control of your computer and use it to send spam, steal ID information, and attack and infect other computers.

How do I know if I have Conficker?

Two of the most common symptoms of an infection are not being able to visit the websites of antivirus software companies like Trend Micro, Symantec, or McAfee; and not being able to visit Microsoft's Windows Update website.

How can I protect myself from Conficker?

Two important steps to take to protect your computer from Conficker are to ensure that you have installed all critical updates from the Windows Update website, and that you have up-to-date commercial antivirus software from a commercial antivirus software company. We do not recommend using free antivirus software, as these products are not thorough or comprehensive and can leave your computer exposed to security threats.

What should I do if I'm infected?

Follow the instructions from your antivirus software company for removal. It is important to understand that simply removing the virus with antivirus software is not enough — you will also need to follow the additional removal instructions as laid out for the specific variant of the worm that has infected your computer. Symantec's instructions are excellent.
